What is Animal Chiropractic?

by | Jun 23, 2020 | ANIMAL CHIROPRACTIC

At our office in East Vancouver we have the pleasure of seeing animals as well as humans. This means we get a lot of questions about animal chiropractic so I thought I’d take the time to answer some of the top questions our clients ask.

What is animal chiropractic?

Animal chiropractic is a hands-on form of healthcare that locates and corrects joint dysfunction. When a joint isn’t functioning properly, there is a disruption in the communication between that part of the body and the brain. This can lead to stiffness, abnormal postures/movement, and PAIN.

However, pain in dogs and cats doesn’t always present as clear as in humans. Humans we have the ability to express that we are in some sort of pain or discomfort. Our four-legged friends can’t directly tell us that they are experiencing pain so we rely on signs such as limping, whining, or crying that they are in need of treatment or attention.

Pain can also present in other ways that reflects changes in behavior such as increased anxiety, refusal to eat, or a shift in energy levels or behaviour.

By correcting joint dysfunction through the adjustment we are restoring normal brain to body connection for your animal, which may result in:

  • Decreased pain
  • Better movement patterns
  • Decreased stiffness
  • Improvement in behavior

Are there signs that my animal can benefit from an adjustment?

Yes! Here are a list of the most common reasons why people seek out an animal chiropractor:

  • Limping
  • Stiffness
  • Slowing down on walks
  • Repeated licking and chewing a specific area
  • No longer greeting you at the door
  • Behavioral changes
  • Problems eating/refusal to eat
  • Hypersensitivity to touch
  • Reluctance to perform certain movements
  • Altered sitting behavior
  • Urine dribbling

My pet seems fine, can they still get adjusted?

Yes! Just like in humans many conditions remain unnoticed until a trained eye and thorough exam is performed. Underlying conditions and compensations may take months or years to present as a noticeable symptom that owners will pick up on. It is better to have your dog or cat adjusted occasionally before any symptoms arise to ensure that they are performing and feeling 100%.

Are there other benefits?

Yes! Animals that get adjusted tend to age with more ease and less issues than their non-chiropractic counterparts. Chiropractic adjustments over the course of your animals life will help them to live a healthier happier life.
